Advisors
We got some great news over the weekend. Since Billo and I have actually never made any wine before, we felt it would benefit us to put together an informal Board of Advisors.We asked Harry Peterson-Nedry, Stephen Lagier and Dr. Carole Meredith and they all agreed to help us out. Wow!!!

Barrels and Blend
Billo and I decided on a barrel strategy for this year. Both of us feel that, with a few exceptions, Syrah doesn’t do well with a lot of new oak. We’ve decided to use only 20 – 25% new oak.

Artifex
We now have a place to make our first wines. We just signed the contract to make wine at Artifex and will be sending a deposit shortly. Now we need to get some racks and barrels.

28 acres (no mule)
We are now the proud owners of 28 acres of prime land in Milton-Freewater. Yeah!!!
The first thing we noticed about this land was the rocks–large basalt cobblestones. The soil is made of coarse-grain alluvial sediments consisting mainly of these basalt cobblestones. This soil will yield wines of great structure and individuality. Man! I can’t wait.

Another Closing
In March, we purchased 13 acres of property in Milton-Freewater, Oregon. Milton-Freewater sits on the border of Washington and Oregon, several miles south of the town of Walla Walla. This is our first purchase and we are psyched. The property is on “the rocks”.
